At the start of September, one of our post-docs, Caitlyn McGeer, presented at the Digital Futures. She presented on a panel focused on online harms. Caitlyn discussed the preliminary results from our surveys and focus groups in Kenya, South Africa, and Ethiopia. Caitlyn showcased the diversity and nuances of hate speech and mis/dis-information even within national borders and how this poses significant challenges for regulation. She also out forth the possibility of using social media platforms to conduct research on digital repression in harder-to-reach areas on the continent.
