Media and Conflict

PCMLP has a strong interest issues around media and conflict. Several of our research projects in the past have examined these issues, such as the book published by Monroe Price and Mark Thompson, Forging Peace, as well as studies on Hate Speech. We continue to publish in this area: see the recent article by Price, Al Marashi and Stremlau on the Media in the Peacebuilding Process: Ethiopia and Iraq.

Nicole Stremlau is currently working on a book project considering the role of the media in violent conflict in Eastern Africa.

She is also co-authoring a book with Iginio Gagliardone on the Oral Histories of Eastern African Journalists. The research draws on oral histories from some of Eastern Africa's most influential and prominent newspaper journalists that have been key actors in their nation's founding. Many of these journalists are former guerrilla fighters. While the authors have synthesized, drawn comparisons and interpreted the material, the intention has been to preserve the original voices of the journalists in an effort to provide a unique perspective on the press in this region. Our research sheds new insight into the impact political/economic transitions and revolutions have on the values and perceptions of journalists and vice-versa - how the work of these journalists has influenced changes in their societies during critical periods of history.
