Over the past three years, PCMLP has co-organized Oxford-India Media Law Moot Court Competition in Delhi with our partners at the National Law University, Delhi. The competition has grown to include dozens of teams from South Asia. At the centre of the moot court is the development of a network that includes a variety of key stakeholders central to supporting and enforcing freedom of expression.
In conjunction with the moot court, we organize symposiums and workshops. Examples include Comparative Perspectives on Media Regulation and Society, which involved more than 30 speakers from universities, industry, government and NGOs. A focus was on contentious issues of content regulation in the context of rapidly changing communication technologies. Panels included discussion on international perspectives on co-regulation and self-regulation; the tensions between national security and freedom of expression; debates over transnational regulation of the Internet; and the role of media in nationbuilding and economic growth.
These events represent the start of a long-term research engagement on media regulation issues in India.
