Daniel Bekele, who is currently studying for a DPhil in Law at Oxford, is one of the four courageous and tireless advocates of human rights - from Burma, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia and Russia - who have been awarded the prestigious Alison Des Forges Defender Award for Extraordinary Activism by Human Rights Watch. The four work to uphold freedom of expression, to protect women in conflict, and to ease the plight of political prisoners, despite threats and persecution from the authorities.
